GoNintendo ‘End of Day’ thoughts - Spreading the word on Wii games
Turns out that I had internet upgrade issues, as well as a dead router…all in one day! How’s that for some crappy luck? Now, before I head to bed…I get to go to Walmart and grab a new router. What a great way to start/end the day! See you guys in a few, short hours. While I was out for Mom Brain’s birthday bash, I had the chance to see someone that I don’t often talk to. This guy is a gamer…one that I would call ‘hardcore’ without batting an eyelash. I know he plays a ton of games, and owns all the current gen consoles and portables. I figured that he would be quite up on what’s going on for all the systems, but surprisingly enough, he wasn’t too up-to-date on the Wii. We first talked about The Conduit, which he was already aware of. While he knew of the game, he didn’t know about the reviews or anything like that. He also didn’t know what to expect from the online play. High Voltage has gone out of their way to create an online experience unlike any other on Wii, and many are realizing that they’ve gone above and beyond in creating that online arena. Unfortunately, too many people have no faith in the Wii when it comes to online. When support is minor at best, and Friend Codes are an issue, why would anyone bother playing a Wii game online when they could have a much easier experience on PS3 or 360? We moved on from there to discussing Overlord. I happened to know that this guy was a big Overlord player. I caught him playing the original a few times in the past. I knew he’d be getting the sequel, and that he did. While he wasn’t too happy with Overlord 2, he said he didn’t purchase Overlord: Dark Legend. Why is that, you ask? Well, he thought the game was a port of the first one. Once again, this shows you just how little information gets out there on the Wii versions of games. When I told this guy that Overlord: Dark Legend was a brand-new, Wii-exclusive game…he was a bit floored. How do we go about combating situations like these? I think it comes down to the gaming press, and its coverage of Nintendo platforms. The Wii and DS may be the biggest sellers in this generation, but the coverage of their games pales in comparison to 360/PS3/PSP. Many outlets just don’t devote as much coverage to games on Nintendo platforms because they believe there’s not much interest in them. We have to start proving that that isn’t the case. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love running GoNintendo, and bringing Nintendo-specific news to the web. I just wish that the overall coverage of Nintendo platforms was a bit more widespread.
