Friday is here and I couldn’t be happier! My copy of Ivy the Kiwi? should be arriving at my front door in a few hours. What a great game to relax with over the weekend…I hope! Here’s to hoping that you guys have some great games lined up for the weekend as well. Let’s get through Friday so we can have some fun! I’m off to bed for some much-needed rest. That’ll help me power through Friday! See you in a few, short hours. P.S. - Unless I’m mistaken, Metroid: Other M reviews go live at 1 PM EST today! We have ours ready. I can’t wait to see what others think! Damnit Cory, why on earth do you have to keep making such great comics? Last week to put together a comic that I thought was my favorite one yet. That was a multi-panel comic that was full of great art and a wonderful joke. This time around you go with a single panel paired with a great joke and some beautiful art. Now I think I have yet another favorite! It’s very clear to me now. The only thing Cory knows is how to top his previous work with each passing week!

How about that Metroid: Other M live-action commercial?! Man, I can’t stop watching that baby. Some of the best commercial work Nintendo has ever done, in my opinion. It seems like Nintendo really knows how to nail the Metroid TV spots. I’m going to head off and dream about that one! I’ll see you all in a few, short hours. P.S. - Thanks to everyone for the email/Facebook birthday wishes yesterday! I really, really appreciate all the kind words. Time for me to jump the gun with volume 2 of the ‘bit and run’ series. I can already say that this comic is one of my favorites in the entire series, and that goes for both volumes 1 and 2. I love the art-style, and the joke is spot-on. I love the way that Cory manages to tell a story, make it beautiful, hit all the right nostalgic notes, and come off being funny and thought-engaging. More than I could ever hope to accomplish with a drawing!

Ah, it’s been awhile since we had a show that screwed up while recording. Glad to see that we can still have problems from time to time! The show ended up saving at a much lower quality than normal. Rather than edit down a show and make it harder to hear, I’m just giving you the raw file. It’s better than nothing, but it’s certainly not up to our usual standards. My apologies for the issue! Download the show here (thanks to our old comic artist Scott for his artwork!)

Cory has a lot to say in this week’s feature, so I figured I’d leave the post to him! I mean, it’s his feature after all. It doesn’t need to be cluttered up with my nonsensical ramblings. I’ll just step aside and let him do his thing. I needed to get some rest anyways! See you in a few, short hours. __________________ Hey everyone, it’s good to be back with bit and run! As I said just about every week during the first run of comics, it’s a pleasure to make these. I get a ton of enjoyment out it and I’m very glad if you guys are able to enjoy them as well. I wanted to give you a little bonus for this week, but first a little background on this “bit and run” project — some of you may remember back in January of this year why I started making these comics. I was in the midst of large client project in the fall/winter of 2009 (I work as an animator and illustrator) I was doing something like 15, 17 hours a day, 7 days a week for 3 months. I found that I couldn’t sleep after working that long, my mind buzzing with everything I wasn’t done with, so to help keep my sanity I’d play a little Mario before I crashed for the night. Mario 2, Mario 3 mostly. I found it absolutely decompressed me. From there, in the early hours of the morning I began to think up comics and started jotting them down while playing. I have no idea why. I don’t know where they came from. After a few nights of this I amassed a folder full of quickly scrawled comics and doodles. To contrast making a comic in say an hour or two with a months long project that never seemed complete brought me the satisfaction I was missing. From there we’ve got bit and run Volume One. So all that to say I wrote all of these comics (Vol. 1 and 2) many months ago. Now with Volume Two I’m going back to that folder but I’m trying a few new things; spending a little more time on the drawing, pushing the 8-bit palette some, rewriting and adding new comics, and like with today’s for example, I made a bonus. Below you’ll find an “extended” cut, so to speak. I went ahead with the original version (above) but I decided to do a little extra with the same idea. Certainly the original is my preferred version but after Mario’s sentence in the third panel of the extended comic below came to me and struck me so dang funny I had to finish the whole thing. And I like the way the Thwomp looks in panel 2. So, long story short, in the end I wanted to give you guys both. I hope you enjoy. And one last thing, in case it hasn’t been clearly stated yet — we’re back for another three months of Fridays with these comics. August 6th - October 29th. Enjoy! __________________

Holy crap, 260 shows already? Does that mean something special? We couldn’t really figure that out during the show, but I’d say that it was still a good one. Just ignore the music section, because we absolutely bomb that. Download the show here (and please put that picture to good use!)

In my opinion, we had a great show this week! We had a very full cast, and we had plenty to talk about. Last week’s show was a bit short due to just wrapping up the trip to North Carolina. This week we almost don’t have enough time to talk about everything on our minds! Download the show here (Stranger is clearly excited about it!)

As much as I like to push the weekend hours as much as possible, I think it’s time for me to head to bed. I’d love to stay up and play games all night, but that would just end up ruining the rest of my weekend. I don’t want to stay up super late on Saturday morning, just to sleep Saturday and Sunday away! I’m calling it quits for the night, but I’ll see you all in a few, short hours. I can’t believe we haven’t talked about this cartoon series more! I think it might have something to do with my dislike for the series. It doesn’t have anything to do with Kirby as a character, but instead, the way this Japanese series was brought over to the states. The amount of cuts, edits and removals that Kirby: Right Back At Ya! saw in its localization were staggering. We’re talking about music changes, sound effects, character personality traits and relationships…major, major changes. To put it lightly, the show was butchered from its original version. With that said, let’s check out episode one of the series and see how it holds up. I think at a later date, we’ll take a look at the Japanese version’s first episode with English subs. It should be interesting to see which one comes out on top. Direct link here

I’m not going to sugarcoat it. This show isn’t the best show we’ve ever done. After having an 8 hour ride in the car, I was pretty much spent! Let’s see if we can’t make next week a better episode, shall we? Download the show here (and have the picture explained…maybe)

I just took some Alka-Seltzer to settle my stomach and headache. Now I’m actually feeling worse. Isn’t that the opposite of what’s supposed to happen? Hopefully some rest will help scare away these yucky feelings. Hopefully, wherever you guys are tonight, you’re feeling in tip-top shape! I’ll see you all in a few, short hours. It seems like the big thing in gaming right now is for developers to collaborate with one another. Back in the earlier days of gaming, devs didn’t really work together on creating titles. You saw the odd collaboration from time to time, but it was mostly a solitary dev experience. I don’t know what sparked the change in development attitude, but now we’re seeing all sorts of pairings that I would have never thought of. Obviously, Nintendo has worked with some other developers in the past, but they seem to be branching out even more nowadays. Take a look at Metroid: Other M for example. While having Retro work on the Metroid series made since with their second party status, seeing Samus being worked on with Team Ninja is something I couldn’t have thought up in my wildest dreams. It’s sure to make for one hell of a unique Metroid outing. I’m just hoping that the experiment ends up being worth the venture in the first place. While Nintendo has paired up with some big developers in the past, they still have plenty of opportunities to do so in their future. With this new, much more open approach to third parties, you have to wonder who Nintendo will take on as time rolls on. The 3DS could be the beginning of a new approach to gave development. For better or worse, the Big N could try to tackle some more of their long-running franchises with other devs at the helm. Personally, I would love to see Nintendo and Square-Enix work together again on another Super Mario RPG. I love the Paper Mario series, as well as the Mario and Luigi series. I want those game franchises to continue on for many, many years. With that said, I’d still like to see Square-Enix come back in to work on a true sequel to the SNES classic. That was the last Square title we saw on a Nintendo platform for many, many years. Thankfully, it was a fantastic game. I think the pairing could work wonders by revisiting that game world.
